Gengo is a website that offers people the possibility of being translators and earning income with it, a service they offer to their wide range of clients. In this test, we will be classified errors in 3 levels.
- Low
- Medium
- Critical
This will help us understand how serious an error is that we make during the test. But we must understand that errors are an important point in the test that we will present for our candidacy as a translator.
The approval criterion is as we said, quite demanding,to the level that during their test we can have a maximum of1 Medium Error or 3 Low Errors. And yes, 0 critical errorsthese last ones are reason for direct disapproval.
If you want to know a little more about the classification criterion and how the exam works that translators present to be classified as translators for Gengo. I leave you access to the resources of the Gengo community and I recommend reviewing the "Test Expectations" they are very helpful.
¿Cómo tengo acceso a mejores trabajos?
Gengo has a rating system where we can unlock according to passing tests that we can do on the platform. Similar to taking a promotion exam in a regular job, yes they will give us better jobs but also the complexity of what they want to translate will multiply.
¿Como paga Gengo a sus traductores?
Payments from Gengo as with any normal work are processed on the 10th and 25th of each month, that is, around the mid-month. But you can only request them up to 7 days before the deadline, if we do it when less than 7 days are left, we will be for the next withdrawal process.
Gengo pays its translators through two main payment methods:
- Paypal
- Payoneer
Both have their advantages and disadvantages so the best thing is to explain how they work in terms of commissions and you can decide which one to use.
Paypal
In the case of Paypal it has many commissions but it has a lower withdrawal amount, we explain a little about the commission system that this payment method has:
Commissions associated with paypal and minimum withdrawals.
Paypal charges a transaction fee of 1.5% of what you want to withdraw, starting with a minimum commission of $1.50 up to a maximum commission of $20. So we must always keep in mind that they will charge us at least $1.50 for each withdrawal of what we request.
But it has the benefit of a much lower platform withdrawal minimum, being able to withdraw from $2 without any problem. That said, keep in mind that in that case we will still have to pay the commission so it is not very advisable to withdraw small amounts.
Payoneer
Unlike Paypal this does not generate commissions when receiving transfers, but it does generate commissions when using the balance of our account. This makes it more difficult to estimate how much commission will be charged us, because it can be from using the Payoneer card which has costs per movement of up to 4% plus additional fees in certain countries.
Therefore we must estimate at least a 5% commission on our paid balance in Payoneer because the commission system is quite strong. Apart from if we have a card with them we must pay their annual fee of practically $30 per year.
Common reasons why translators are rejected by Gengo
Gengo maintains high quality standards so its translators must be at the level and when presenting the test there are 3 main reasons why they can be rejected as such:
Incorrect language.
And no, I'm not talking about confusing a Spanish test with a Japanese one, but of how to translate a text into Spanish. Since the way to translate for example an English text to Spain is different from how we could translate it to Latin America since it is not neutral the writing style of both dialects.
Bad translation
This is linked to the errors we mentioned above where grammatical errors can be reason for direct rejection, especially the critical ones.
Machine translation or mechanical translation.
If our translation was made by some mechanical means the way of writing is usually quite recognizable since it does not end up translating naturally. So if you think you can do it through a mechanical translator or a translation AI. Better not to do it and don't even try.
